Pisa (PSA) is the closest airport, approximately 40 minutes from our house by car. It is a small airport and relatively easy to navigate. The rental car facility is adjacent to the terminal, and can be accessed by shuttle bus or a 5-10 minute walk. Most major airlines fly here, including a direct flight from New York (JFK) on Delta.
Florence airport (FLR) is approximately a one hour drive from the house, and is served well by Swissair, among others. Its location, on a flat, windy plain, has been know to cause flight problems but is an acceptable option.
Milan airport (MXP) is approximately three hours away. It's by far the largest of the three airports we include here, and many international direct flights are available.
Upon your reservation, we will provide detailed directions from each airport option.
Viareggio and Lucca both have large train stations on main routes. Car rental is available near both locations.
Whether you're traveling by air or train, you'll have access to most popular rental car companies, including Hertz, Thrifty, Budget, Enterprise, Sixt, and Europcar. Bear in mind that cell phone/device use while driving is strictly prohibited and tickets are given freely! In addition, Italy has deployed a growing number of automated intersection cameras that see all, resulting in a ticket that could reach you (or the rental car company) weeks after. Also to note is that manual transmission cars are very common in rental fleets here, so if you do not drive a 'stick' you should specific an automatic transmission in advance.
