Pietrasanta has long been famous for its marble yards, where stone from Carrara and around the world is processed. Michelangelo sculpted the Pieta here in the 15th century. Still a thriving artists' community and home to several foundries, the beautiful town square is filled with sculpture exhibits throughout the summer. The several small cafes in town are often filled with artists toting sketchpads or covered in marble dust. In recent years Pietrasanta has become a culinary destination with a number of excellent restaurants.
